Covent Garden - Viking Period

viking london reconstruction

In the 9th Century Lundenwic, with its centre at Covent Garden, was attacked and burnt down by Vikings. There were attacks in 842 and 851, and the Vikings wintered in London during 871-2.

The English made the decision, probably during the reign of King Alfred, to move back in the old city of Londinium where they would be defended by the the Roman Walls.
